James Brooks
American · 1906
James Brooks was a first-generation Abstract Expressionist whose lyrical, improvisational canvases helped define the New York School. Beginning as a WPA muralist — his Flight mural at LaGuardia's Marine Air Terminal is among the era's finest — Brooks moved into abstraction in the late 1940s, pioneering a stain technique in which poured and blotted pigment generated spontaneous, calligraphic form. His work is held in major American museums including the Whitney and the Museum of Modern Art, and supports a steady secondary market across paintings and works on paper. Rosenfeld Gallery handles secondary-market works by James Brooks. To acquire or sell a Brooks, contact us for confidential advice on availability, value and provenance.
