Richard Prince is one of the most celebrated American painters of his generation. He became famous in the 1980s for his series Cowboys, Jokes and Hoods, in which Prince used imagery from magazines, popular culture and pulp fiction to create photographs, sculptures and paintings that appeal to ideas of American identity and the consumer world.
Since the 1970s, he has reproduced and reinterpreted these motifs in photography and painting.
In his recent works, Prince seeks to go further by invading design and using luxury items like canvases. Prince collaborated with Marc Jacobs in 2008 for Louis Vuitton's spring collection, After Dark. The artist monogrammed bags and wrote jokes about his favorite themes of gender, race or poverty.
His works are held in The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Goetz Collection in Munich, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Prince currently lives and works in New York.
